As the bidding war began for the England pacer he did prove to be a hot commodity. Punjab, Mumbai, Delhi all tried to battle it out for him. Even KKR joined into the fray as his price soared past 10 crores. However, ultimately it was the Royal Challengers Bangalore who secured his services for a whopping Rs 12 crores.

Puren is not taking the million Rands home all by himself, not yet. If other fans are able to achieve the same feat at any of the other televised games, the one million Rand will be split equally. Only if that fails to happen, Puren will be a million Rand richer!

"I can say that the family definitely has played a significant role in developing cricket and making cricket a success story, and I would like to say this with the utmost humility. My father, my uncles, my cousins - we're all a passionate cricket family.

The "Millionaire" format is sold worldwide with the same rules, with small variations, like the amount of the final prize to adjust for the currency value. One rule is the presence of the two milestone - or "parachute" - questions (#5 and #10), to prevent the contestants' prize from falling further if they answer wrong. Yet the host keeps mentioning that if Jamal answers wrong he will "lose everything" or "get nothing".

A year and a half ago, when Rashid made his international debut for Afghanistan in an ODI against Zimbabwe, he was just another ordinary associate player. However, within a short span of time, he has gone on to become the flag-bearer of Afghanistan cricket.

Edmonds and Boycott formed the oddest pair of friends imaginable on a cricket ground. Both were intelligent, outspoken, talented, and arrogant, and were hard to befriend. Known for his haughty, eccentric behaviour, Edmonds surprised everyone when he was the only one who went up to Boycott in the dressing room and put an arm around him. Boycott coined the term ‘Fitzwilliam Twins’ to describe themselves (Boycott came from Fitzwilliam, and Edmonds had studied at the same city).

Cricket is an extremely popular sport around the world. People are fond of it and love to watch every match. It has become a profession as well. The cricketers are idols of many individuals. Well, that’s not bad on the grounds that they win for the nation and adds to its glory. Along with that, this is likewise genuine that they are among the highest earning athletes as cricket is highest paying game. Worldwide, its craze is tremendous.

“There are two boxes that need to be ticked: whether the player is good enough and their availability,” says Madley. “Few English players have ticked both in the past. Franchise holders want to build a team to take them to the final, and if a player won’t be there at the end, they may think twice. After all, no Premier League club would sign a footballer that misses the end of the season and likewise to a fan of the IPL, that’s not good enough.”

The test cricket dream has diminished for most youngsters. If they are talented enough, T20 franchise events can result in enormous pay-packets. Look no further than the two KPs, Pietersen and Pollard, to see how much coin can be made while thoroughly enjoying the ride. @KP24's situation was forced but he sure ain't looking back.

Despite his containing attitude, Edmonds often resorted to bowling aggressively, often when his captain wanted him to bowl otherwise. As Bob Willis once mentioned: “I would want Edmonds to bowl a string of maidens to give the seamers a rest — but that’s not what happened. I would put Edmonds on and he would try to bowl three different kinds of deliveries in an over.” He was too moody to be controlled or dominated. Willis’s attitude, on the other hand, represents the disdain with which spinners of the era were often treated — something which spinners like Edmonds had to endure throughout their careers.

"When my name came up I was nervous, giddy and jumpy. I was on facetime with my best mate and he just kept shouting. The bidding was quite slow but once it hit 10 Crore (£1.2m) I knew it was big money, but it kept going. When it finished I did not know how much it was worth. When I worked it out I could not believe it, it did not seem real. It’s an amount of money that can change your life. It will for me," said Mills.

The original TV show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" is recorded in studio some days before the actual broadcast. The show that we see in the film is broadcast live, which raises the incongruence that the person from home can easily see the question on TV, having plenty of time to come up with an answer before receiving the actual call. This explains the need to have the questions reread on the phone, and the credibility of the time limit. Moreover, the call itself is never directed to a mobile number, to prevent connection troubles, and for the same reason it's never issued directly when the contestant asks for it; the call is first made in the very moment the contestant begins his round and it's then kept live (but soundless) until the contestant calls for the hotline. As a side fact, after the hotline has been used the contact is still kept, so the contestant's people can hear live what happens from then on. However, this kind of show may have a 10-15-minute time delay.

In the movie, the correct answer to the question of who wrote the song "Darshan Do Ghanshyam Naath" is shown as 16th century poet "Kavi Surdas". However in reality, this song is written by Gopal Singh Nepali for the movie Narsi Bhagat. This song is also credited as traditional and originally written by 15th century poet Narsinh Mehta, whose life that film is based on. (Many, including the film, mistakenly attribute it to the 16th-century poet Surdas due to the fact that Surdas was blind and the song is a prayer asking God to "appear" before him, for his "eyes thirst for Your sight".)

As a consequence, the daily grind is taxing, to say the least. For most players in the national squad, days start at 5am, with a two-hour session, before they head home to shower and be at work by 9am. Some can get away for another 90 minutes during a 1:30pm lunch break before going back to work and then coming back in the evening for another session. It means little time is left for family or social endeavours. But players like Ranpura don't seem to mind, especially when they see someone like Pankaj standing by their side.

"Khimji Ramdas is like family for us. I'm playing for him and it's like a second home for us. We celebrate all the festivals together. We are always connected with them. Whenever we have a problem, they are always ready to help us, especially Pankaj bhai, even at the local league. All the time, he and Kanaksi, whenever they are available, they are on the ground watching 50-over games and T20 games all the time."

The success story of Afghanistan’s teenage sensation, Rashid Khan, is a lot similar to that of Jamal Malik, the protagonist of the 2008-starrer ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. The movie dealt with the story of an 18-year old boy from the slums of Mumbai who fought his way through crime, hardships and struggles to become a millionaire one day. Similar has been the case with Rashid Khan, an 18-year old boy from Nangarhar, who fought his way through a war-torn Afghan nation to become a million-dollar teenage cricket-star and possibly an icon.

The family's modesty also stands out. A regular fixture at Oman's various tournament stops around the world, Pankaj is enthusiastic but hardly bombastic in his support for the team from the sidelines. He is quick to deflect attention onto others, especially regarding the team's resurgence over the last two years, for which he credits current coach and development officer Duleep Mendis.

"A couple of years ago His Majesty gave us an endowment to develop the infrastructure of cricket in Oman," Pankaj says. "That's when we got our green grounds, and we're now building a clubhouse with an indoor eight-lane practice wicket. Hopefully, by September 2017, we should have our clubhouse and our facility, which we can call the home of cricket in Oman. We got our qualification from the ministry of sports a few years ago, which meant we are now able to receive some funds to develop cricket, especially when we are going on overseas tours."

A lot of international cricketers in Australia and New Zealand have been reading these lists. They know they don't warrant the same income as a Watson or a Johnson; but are they worth one-40th, one-100th of those players? They are part of the same entertainment package, raising the same overall revenue, as the big earners. Material envy and resentment are not far beneath the surface; look at what it has done to West Indies cricket. A few years ago, inequality across the same pitch was enough to drive Hansie Cronje to sell his soul for American dollars and a leather jacket.

Hughes adds: “He was often fractious, set strange fields and omitted players he disliked, e.g. Selvey, a skilled seamer, even on a pitch the colour of a billiard table. If his spinning partner suddenly found some turn on a particular wicket he would bring himself on from that end, relegating his colleague to the opposite one.”

Most critics viewed King Ralph as a one-joke comedy that relied heavily on Goodman's charm. He certainly won no awards for his role but perhaps the director, Arthur Hiller, saw something in the cricket scene: the following year he cast Goodman as Babe Ruth in the biopic The Babe.

“On the night, she said she had been worried and I wanted to see she was OK. I have lost a wife, my children have lost their mother, it is a sorry state of affairs but we all love and care for her still.”

England slipped to 80 for five and 255 all out after Ravi Ashwin’s first five-for of the series. Rashid and Stuart Broad pegged India back with four wickets each but a target of 405 was beyond England, who played for a draw but were skittled for 158, losing all 10 wickets for 83 runs after Cook and Hameed had seen off the first 50 overs.

Certain infrastructure improvements have also played a major role in Oman's recent success. For years, cricket in the country was played on artificial wickets, before the inaugural turf wicket opened at Al Amerat, a facility on the south-eastern outskirts of Muscat, in late 2012. A second floodlit turf ground opened up in the same complex in late 2015, and a third ground, with practice facilities, is currently being developed at the site; it is scheduled to open later this year.

But Jody had previously asked Fergus to seek out his girlfriend should he be killed. Fergus heads to London and does so. The two hit it off, and while getting "acquainted", Fergus suffers from a guilty mind and dreams of Jody - a keen cricketer - bowling a cricket ball at him. Whitaker's cricket scene is brief and hazy but - a somewhat clunky action notwithstanding - he makes a pretty good stab at bowling.

When Jamal is asked by Latika to leave the mansion and forget about her, he accidentally pulls up one side of his collar when taking off his apron. However, in the next shot, his collar is down again. When he actually leaves the mansion his collar is up once again.

“Once a year some say I’m the most influential man in world cricket,” Madley tells the Observer during a break from valuing porcelain and oriental rugs at a country house in Somerset, while pointing out the Wiltshire League has no eighth division. “My role as the IPL auctioneer is not too dissimilar to an umpire. They like that I am authoritative, clipped in my pronunciation, rigid in my increments and I don’t stand too much nonsense.”

Imagine going to a stadium to watch a T20 game on a Sunday evening. Electrifying cricket, big sixes and acrobatic fielding make it worth the money and time anyway. And then you end up winning some money, a lot of money. Unbelievable? Not if you are Bosman Puren. Puren, a 35-year-old cricket enthusiast from Potchefstroom, won a million Rand (about Rs 54.8 lakh) after he caught a six with one hand during a televised Ram Slam T20 match between Chevrolet Knights and Highveld Lions. The competition was open for fans over 18 years of age. So when Pite van Biljon of the Knights slammed the only six in his 29-ball 33, Puren was in position to pouch the ball one handed and make his big bucks and long after the match was over, he still could not believe his luck. "The Ram Slam is a brilliant experience. I'm fortunate to have caught that one. I'm still flabbergasted. Thank you!," Puren said. Puren is not taking the million Rands home all by himself, not yet. If other fans are able to achieve the same feat at any of the other televised games, the one million Rand will be split equally. Only if that fails to happen, Puren will be a million Rand richer! Despite their differences, Mike Brearley, Edmonds’ predecessor at Middlesex, often rated Edmonds as a good reader of the sport, and nominated him the vice-captain for Middlesex. Edmonds was under the perpetual impression that he would have become a better captain than Brearley. Edmonds often led Middlesex when Brearley was on international duty, and though Middlesex did quite well under him, he was more renowned for his eccentricities.

MS DhoniIn 2001, when MS Dhoni bagged a job as a ticket collector at Kharagpur Railway Station, it was a big moment for his family. The job provided a source of steady income (Dhoni used to make some money playing club cricket before that) and helped pay the bills. The riches didn’t come in until he was selected for the Indian team (he was out for a first-ball duck at his debut) after grinding out five seasons on the domestic circuit. Dhoni spent this time having an ‘it doesn’t matter’ approach towards selectors and focused on fine-tuning his batting and wicket-keeping skills. With his entry, India finally found a stable wicket-keeper batsman after years of confusion (mostly, it was Rahul Dravid who had to man the gloves) resulting from Nayan Mongia’s retirement. Today, MS Dhoni sits atop a $31 million empire and is the 23rd richest athlete in the world. More importantly, he’s won every major ICC trophy for India. With such a solid resume, Dhoni doesn’t just make us look bad, he makes others in this list seem like underachievers.

The modern era of cricket in Oman began in the 1970s, spearheaded by the enthusiasm of the Khimji patriarch, Kanaksi, a man Zaidi refers to as "the godfather of cricket in Oman". With the support of the Oman royal family, Oman Cricket was formally established in 1979, with Kanaksi as president and His Highness Sayyid Abbas Bin Faisal as patron-in-chief.

Phil Edmonds was born in Zambia, had a Belgian mother, was a close friend of Geoff Boycott, has a hyphenated first name (Philippe-Henri), wore a Swatch while fielding at forward short-leg, and drives a Rolls-Royce. Any one of the six attributes would have made a Test cricketer unique, but Edmonds has managed to check six boxes out of six. And there is even more.

On another occasion, in the Calcutta Test of 1984-85, when Sunil Gavaskar killed the Test by carrying the first innings of the Test into the fourth day, Edmonds emulated Warwick Armstrong by reading a newspaper at square-leg. Gavaskar eventually had to declare when the police told him that there the restless crowd might end up having a riot if he did not declare immediately.
